Melbreck Technical are working with a leading designer and manufacturer of automated equipment based in West Sussex near Crawley. Due to internal moves and continued sales growth they are looking to add additional support to their design team in the form of a Mechanical Design Engineer. Scope of the role: To ensure that new or improved products; services; processes and systems are designed, developed and commercialised to meet customer and other needs in a timely and cost effective manner. To ensure that new products and services supplied are produced to specification and fit for purpose and when appropriate, in accordance with requirements agreed by the customer. To enhance customer satisfaction through the continuous improvement of the product and service supply process. The process starts with a new market need being identified during the Marketing and Sales process or with internal idea generation and ends when the item is fully developed and production and supply is underway. Once sold, Design involvement starts from receiving a Works Order from Marketing and Sales and ends when the product manufacturing drawings and corresponding Works Instruction have been issued. This includes the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems. Responsibilities The Design Engineer is responsible for being involved in the process to develop new or improve existing product(s) and the Project Design element of supplying new product(s). Duties Be involved in the process of defining the performance specification from customer's requirements; market research; legal requirements and standards; company strategy and commercial considerations. Regulatory and technical compliance shall be assured. Ensure the product risk assessment(s) shall be conducted to ensure threats / hazards are identified, managed and that requirements can be met by the potential design. Ensure the new product concept is developed through sound scientific, technological and engineering principles and know. Assist in safeguarding company intellectual property, including patent protection. Involvement in the relevant design reviews to confirm the new product proposal. Assist with the content of all the technical files, installation and operating instructions, conformity documents and marketing materials technical elements. Comply with the control design changes or freeze design process and record changes made. Manage the project design process from evaluating the works order as follows: o Manage the project. o Full evaluation of the Works Order. o Attend client's premises/site for meetings, surveys and any other related business as and when required. o Generate relevant GA drawing from site survey information or client drawings. o Handle any changes to the requirement appropriately with the relevant Stakeholder(s). o Gather formal client written approval to move into production. o Create manufacturing drawings and issue Works Instruction. Job Holder Requirements: Good fundamental engineering knowledge. Knowledge of Hydraulic systems. Good written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work with Microsoft products, such as Excel, Word and Outlook. Good organisational skills with the ability to prioritise tasks to meet internal/ external deadlines. Ability to apply original and creative thought to solve problems and improve current designs. The use of FEA techniques to support the design process. Minimum of 5 years' experience in a similar position. Proficient in the use of Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD BTEC HNC in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
