An exciting opportunity has arisen to join NPL's newly established Quantum Metrology Institute in the area of ultra-stable lasers and optical cavities. The successful candidate will play a key role in the Time and Frequency Group's ( ) effort in developing ultra-stable lasers for both space and ground-based applications, including optical atomic clocks, earth observation, and space science.
This work involves the design, modelling, and building of high-finesse optical cavity systems for laser stabilisation. You will also undertake full system evaluations by locking a laser to a cavity and comparing stability against a second system. Much of this work is collaborative and you will be liaising with our European partners. This research area is part of a wider UK quantum technologies initiative, which aims to translate quantum physics research to commercial products.
The ideal candidate will be qualified to PhD level in Physics, or a related subject, preferably with post-doctoral research experience. We are seeking an enthusiastic research physicist who is self-motivated and able to work as part of a team. Knowledge and experience of laser frequency stabilisation, optics, frequency metrology, electronic design, finite element modelling and vacuum technology would be beneficial in the role, although training can be provided. Previous experience working with ultra-stable optical cavities would be advantageous.
